This week Stephen co-organized a research retreat at a beautiful French chateau, for Christian Kell’s wonderful group (department of neurology of the Frankfurt University hospital). During the Saturday-night workshop I presented our project and explained and demonstrated some principles of sounds synthesis. We then set to work to create synthesizer patches that simulated neuronal mechanisms of cognitive processes. I took Marr‘s three levels of explanation as a starting point, with the idea to use synthesizer patches as representations of the implementation level of cognitive functions. The group got the idea instantly and it was a lot of fun. It seems music inspires scientists at least as much as science inspires musicians!
